I. List of Legal translator duties:

  1. Assists in the preparation of patent evaluation reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information.
  2. Keeps records and maintains a database of documents as they are translated and evaluated.
  3. Assists in the understanding of the nuances of translated documents by investigating and understanding unfamiliar definitions and terms.
  4. Reading through original material and rewriting it in the target language, ensuring that the meaning of the source text is retained.
  5. Using specialist dictionaries, thesauruses and reference books to find the closest equivalents for terminology and words used.
  6. Researching legal, technical and scientific phraseology to find the correct translation.
  7. Proofreading and editing final translated and edited documents.
  8. Providing grammatically correct, well-expressed final version of the translated text, usually as a word-processed document.
  9. Prioritizing work to meet deadlines.
  10. Retaining and developing knowledge of nurse-call systems.

II. List of Legal translator qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in a work-related discipline/field from an accredited college or university
  2. Technical knowledge of electronic communications systems a plus (audio, video, intercom, telephony).
  3. Very good skills in MS Word, Excel, and IE, and excellent ability to perform web searches.
  4. Education at least at the third-year of undergraduate studies at an academic engineering institution, prefer graduate engineer.
  5. Excellent communication skills
  6. Excellent research skills
  7. Ability to work 15-20 hours per week during normal business hours

  1. Err... why do you need to have studied at an engineering institution to be a legal translator??? I fail to see the link.

    1. that is probably a typo. probably it meant to so that having knowledge in computer systems (as much as possible) is a plus. but then again it is not exactly practicable to know computer languages for a legal translator. i mean that would consume a lot of time. so know your word and excel functions well. and be a voracious internet searcher, that is gonna go a long way
