I. List of Court translator duties:

  1. Reviews each document or form to determine impediments to translatability, e.g. incoherent or vague text, language inconsistencies, etc. and advises OCIS of the issues that require addressing so the original owners/authors may clarify language before the translation process begins;
  2. Completes initial draft translations, works with reviewer or team of reviewers, and submits final translation to the Trial Court Departments.
  3. Develops and maintain a data base of all translated documents, signage, etc.
    Creates and maintains a glossary of translated legal terms for the Trial Court;
  4. Assists in the development of Spanish language/terminology building training seminars, including determining subjects/topics for training, developing training materials and serving as a trainer under the direction of the Program Manager for Training;
  5. Maintains website translations and related online documents;
  6. Performs urgent document translations through prioritization process, including possible translation of Spanish language narratives on official court forms with an expedited turn-around time;
  7. Assists in the creation of best practices for translation protocols and a style manual for the Trial Court;
  8. Assists in the administration of the court interpreter written and oral tests as necessary;
  9. Assists in assigning projects and work closely with internal and external groups to determine deliverables and schedules; coordinates the activities of other language translators; tracks project schedules, maintains project records, and makes adjustments as priorities shift;
  10. Ensures that documentation is produced according to Trial Court information system requirements and web specifications;
  11. Works with translation resources to resolve linguistic issues and concerns;
  12. Participates in committee work regarding language access as needed;
  13. Performs interpreting on occasion to enhance the translator's understanding of court operations and the court experience for any individual with limited English proficiency;
    Serves as a linguistic resource for Spanish court interpreters in the field, researching and providing linguistic support;
  14. Attends ongoing professional improvement training provided or funded by OCIS or the Trial Court as part of continuing education requirements to maintain the highest language abilities.
  15. Maintains accurate records of translating activities and schedules;
  16. Performs various public relations activities such as addressing other agencies as needed;

II. List of Court translator qualifications

  1. A Bachelor's degree (preferably in language translation, or another related field) from a U.S. or recognized foreign university and two years of translation experience, state or federal interpreter certification; certification from a professional translators' association (e.g., ATA certification) is also required;
  2. Knowledge of: the U.S. legal system, primarily so as to ensure comprehension prior to translating; the specialized vocabulary and terms used in the judicial environment; standard grammar for English and Spanish;
  3. Ability to use software such as MS Office (e.g., Word, Excel, Access), Adobe desktop publishing;
  4. Skill in: translating complex and lengthy legal documents from English to Spanish and documents from Spanish to English, and office administration. Ability to: read and write English and Spanish equally well; translate and interpret fluently from English to Spanish and vice versa; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; work independently with minimal supervision; maintain confidentiality;
  5. Ability to manage projects according to guidelines and quality standards, with ability to meet established court timelines;
  6. Ability to maintain accurate and timely records including, but not limited to, data entry and collection of data;
  7. Ability to establish work priorities and to work independently;
  8. Ability to serve the public and others with business before the court in a courteous and professional manner; Ability to accept feedback and maintain flexibility in terminology choices;
  9. Excellent communication and writing skills in English and Spanish and stringent attention to detail;
  10. Ability to travel to court locations throughout the Commonwealth.
  11. Preferred experience: Three or more years of legal experience. Experience in translation project management is also preferred.
